About Tellurium Dioxide
Tellurium dioxide occurs naturally as the mineral "tellurite" with chemical formula TeO₂ and molecular weight 159.60. It forms colorless crystals with a melting point of 732.6°C and exists in two polymorphs: the tetragonal system (octahedral-like crystals obtained from nitric acid solutions) with relative density 5.67 (15°C), and the orthorhombic system (needle-like crystals obtained by cooling the melt) with relative density 5.91 (0°C). It is poorly soluble in water but readily dissolves in concentrated strong acids to form adducts and salts, and in concentrated alkali solutions to form tellurites, while being insoluble in ammonia. TeO₂ can be produced by burning tellurium in oxygen or by reacting tellurium with cold concentrated nitric acid followed by evaporation of the reaction solution. The production method involves reacting elemental tellurium powder with nitric acid until the powder is completely reacted and nitrogen oxide emissions cease, then evaporating and cooling to crystallize basic tellurium nitrate Te₂O₃(OH)NO₃, which is subsequently decomposed by heating at 400-430°C to obtain the final product.
